Canadian Rotarians make a difference to disabled children in the heart of Africa

Facing a lifetime of deformity, disability and despair are ten thousand children in Uganda with neglected clubfeet. Most will never receive the surgical care they need to correct the deformity as there only about a dozen orthopedic surgeons in service in Uganda, Supported by Matching Grants from the Rotary Foundation & the Canadian Rotary Committee for International Development, the Rotary Clubs of Burnaby (5040), New Westminster Royal City (5040) Mesa Sunrise, Mission San Rafael (5150), Delmar (5340), Limbe (9210), and Kampala North (9100) are making a difference in the heart of Africa with the Uganda Clubfoot Project by training local practitioners to treat clubfeet with the Ponseti Method.

The Ponseti treatment for clubfeet (a non-surgical method of gentle manipulation, casting, tenotomy and retentive bracing) can correct the clubfoot deformity in a manner that is socially and economically feasible for society in developing nations.

Based on the success of the Uganda Clubfoot Project, similar projects are now underway in Malawi, Ghana and other countries.
